Meeting what was a demanding though simple brief, the final design was realized as part of the event celebrating the centenary of the 1901 Housing Act (‘100 jaar woningwet’). The subject of much discussion, the design accommodated 25 presentations by artists who each provided their own offbeat view of living in the future. MUA chose a computer game of the first generation, Tetris, as a starting point for the design. Tetris is known to all sections of the population: rectangular elements falling onto a field have to be turned and tipped by the player so that when they land they are stac-ked with maximum efficiency in the available space. These recognizable forms were translated by MUA into three-dimensional elements several metres high.
